Cyst or tumor: A hard lump on your thigh is most likely a cyst or a benign tumor, such as a fibroma.

If the lump has been there a long time, has not changed size and is not painful, you can just "watch" it.  If it has appeared recently or has enlarged, then a surgeon should remove it. A pathologist will then determine if it will be of future concern.

Remove it: The fatty lumps, not just fat itself, should be removed if they cause you any concern.  Although nearly all of these are benign, they may get large and become obtrusive.  They usually can be removed under local anesthesia as an outpatient.

Most of the time these are nothing serious but the only way to be sure is to have a doc take a look. Certainly, if the mass is growing in size, becoming painful, etc., it needs to be evaluated sooner. But a mass could be a lymph node that is enlarged because of serious disease in another part of the body.

Each of these (and many more) will provide your doc the answers as to what it is and what needs to be done.

Each of these (and many more) will provide your doc the answers as to what it is and what needs to be done.
