Tension: The commonest cause of your symptom is a tension headache. Simple analgesics like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil are usually effective. It's not serious, just annoying.

Any changes in vision, hearing, nausea, vomiting, neurological changes like weakness, numbness, confusion, balance problems? Incoordination? Fever? Taking medication? How severe?

Lymph node: The most likely answer is a swollen lymph node. Acne at the hair line or an upper respiratory infection can cause the lymph nodes at the base of the skull and neck to capture infection and swell. The surrounding neck muscles that insert into the skull spasm due to the swollen lymph node and cause tension headaches. If the symptoms persist then see your medical doctor.

i have a 16 year old son. he has been complaining about a dull headache. he said it is in the front and front top of the head.

Frontal Headache: This would be in the area of his frontal sinus and could be sinus headache.  He could also have a tension headache or muscle contraction headache.  History of allergies?  If the headache came on suddenly, that is always a concern for a more serious problem.

Migraine??: The hallmarks of migraine headache are one sided pain, pulsating pain, and correlation with menses.  If you have all of these, the diagnosis is probably migraine headache. Do you have an "aura" or any neurological symptoms such as numbness or weakness? Does Aspirin or Tylenol (acetaminophen) help? If a headache persists more than a few days, a visit to your physician is definitely in order.

Back of head headach: It is hard to know the answer without more information, but tension headache and occipital neuralgia both can affect the back of the head.  Hope that helps!

Time to see doctor: Most people get a headache at some time, such as from colds, infections, lack of sleep, too much driving, long hours on the computer, stress at work, etc... A bad or increasing headache, recurrent headache, weird headache, or with other worrisome symptoms (such as this case of "lightning strikes") should be evaluated by one's primary care doctor or the ER.

Improving: Signs of a serious head injury are worsening headache, blurred or double vision and repeated vomiting or lethargy.
