Patience: If it is hamstring tendinitis, allowing it to heal completely before resuming your training regime is best.  Oftentimes in my practice, patients may return to play too soon and then it becomes a lingering issue for some time.  Generally speaking 4-6 weeks should heal it.  I would suggest another activity in the interim.  Perhaps stationary bike if that does not irritate it.

You need to diagnose: The cause of your pain/discomfort first. If its not the knee area, then the other possibilities of the cause would be the hip joint or the back.
So consult your orthopod and discuss with him/her.

Varies: It really depends on the specific etiology of the problem itself.  Once the root cause is addressed, the symptoms should dissipate.  Don't hesitate to see a specialist.

Biomechanics: Could be a biomechanical flaw in your gait.  Could also have a structural deformity in a limb that puts you at risk for these injuries. I would see an orthopedic first to rule out injury then maybe visit a Podiatrist for possible custom orthotic. A chiropractic evaluation may also be of benefit.

Hard to say: There are many potential causes  of leg pain, and certainly tendonitis can be a cause.  If the pain is along a tendon sheath and it is swollen and tender, then it is probably the cause.  An exam can usually detect the cause.  Thank you for the question.

Diagnosis first!: Tendonitis is a non-specific term that is applied to many areas of pain, though it is often not the correct diagnosis. See a sports med doc to be sure. True tendonitis (inflammation of a tendon) improves with rest, ice, and fixing the contributing mechanical factors. Degenerative changes in tendon (cause pain after the inflammation has subsided)=tendonosis. Treat with eccentric strengthening in pt.

Start with PT: For tendinitis, anti-inflammatory medicines will help with the pain.  But the real treatment is to stretch and strengthen the tendon.  This is best done with formal physical therapy.  Also, sometimes hip muscle weakness can contribute to knee tendinitis. Activity like running is generally ok as long as the pain is minimal.  Start slow and build slowly.
