my 17 yearold has wbc 2.5, low segs, high lymph, low mvc, low mch. normal rbc and hemo and hcrt. been referred to hemo/onc specialist. why?

Just to be sure: These counts are low..So they want to be sure she is making normal amount of blood cells. It is probably due to a virus infection which will resolve in a few days. I would simply repeat the count once more and see if it has returned to normal. If it goes down any further then i would be concerned and make sure she does not have any problem with blood formation.

: Interpretation of any lab test must be done in context. What is the history leading to the evaluation/testing? What if any are the symptoms? These values suggest an inflammatory reaction in the body but without more information no reasoned answer is possible.

Epiphenomenon: Likely just blood count manifestations of the primary disease (ra). Ask your physician to clarify.

Petechiae: are not related to WBC, but to platelets.  Were your platelets normal on the CBC?  Are you sure they are petechiae?  You should see your doc for definitive diagnosis of these spots.  Good luck!

Perfect!: A BP of 100/50 is not too low. In fact, long-term data show a BP at this level is associated with longer lifespan, and fewer heart attacks and strokes. I wish more of my patients had BP levels like this!

Hypotension: You didn't list medications.  Most commonly, a low blood pressure is a side effect of your medications.  If you are on medications, talk to your doc about making some adjustments.  If you are not on meds, you should be checked to rule out anemia, hypothyroidism, e.T.C.  In the meantime, you can increase your intake of non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beveriges, as well as salt.

Hypotension: The spectrum of "normal" blood pressure varies widely and is different for every patient.  99/74 may very well be normal for you.  Signs of inappropriately low blood pressure include dizziness and increasing heart rate.

Only if you feel bad: Cardiologists are fondly quoted as saying that the best blood pressure is the minimum necessary to keep you vibrant, energetic & upright w/o feeling weak, woozy, lightheaded or dizzy, especially when changing positions quickly. Besides, blood pressure varies according to position (see above) & conditions. Still, it's not a bad idea to monitor your BP more closely and calibrate your cuff.

: It’s low but not “critically” low.  Should definitely be evaluated by your Primary Care or Hematologist (not ER or Urgent Care).  Most common cause is iron deficiency due to menstruation, but there are many other possibilities
