when i'm sitting down my hr is 69. upon standing it gets to 99 and when i start walking it gets into the low 100's. what could be wrong?

?Dehydrated: One possible answer is that you could be "intravascularly volume depleted" meaning somewhat 'dehydrated.'Try increasing your fluid intake, replacing electrolytes etc. and see if you feel more refreshed and energetic and your HR goes more to normal. You have a Positive "tilt test" by HR standards, so if this does not help...you need to see the Dr (best-cardiologist) for a routine eval of the issue.

Back problems: Your complaints could be coming from your low back, although you don't mention where the pain is. Arthritis in the spine is very common. That could have caused a bulging disc between 2 vertebrae, which is now pushing on the nerves. Sometimes physical therapy can help. Strengthening your core abdominal muscles helps. See your doc to get a referral to physical therapy.

Oxygen and walking.: If there is not enough oxygen getting to your brain because you have too little oxygen in your blood then yes it will be difficult to walk at all, much less in a straight line. If you are asking about what might cause you to have trouble walking in general, then there are explanations other than low oxygen levels. I suggest providing more detail and asking again, as well as discussing with your MD

Lower back discs: If you have low back pain from disc causes, simple activities of daily living may cause symptomatic exacerbations. You should avoid bedrest greater than 2 days and attempt resumption of your usual lifestyle as you are able. If symptoms persist or worsen, further medical evaluation is suggested to rule out other potential problems.

Are you a pear or...: Are you a pear or apple. Apples are at risk for heart disease and have high Insulin levels do to Insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome.  Pears are low waisted and carry more weight on legs and arms. Pears do not lose much weight with a low carb diet, although their chol/hdl ration stays the same.  But pears are not at risk for heart disease. More women are pears than men.

You're doing well!: going from 270 to 220 will have a significant lowering of risk of diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Of course, you will have  about 500 LESS calories burned per day due to the lower weight. Calorie count, estimates of how much net in/out is a first start. Sounds like with an 1800 cal diet, you should be losing.

Throbbing Lbp: pinched nerve in back.  Try a back adjustment by an osteopathic doctor or a chiropractor first   If symptoms persist you may need deeper evaluation by specialist.

Unusual: We often try to discern cause and effect to understand how injuries occur, but standard walking does not cause annular tearing or protrusion of discs.  However, once present, the gravity effect of prolonged standing or walking, and the jostling on uneven ground can result in exacerbation of the symptoms.

after being sick/anxious for months, i want to start walking, but energy is low. any ideas for steps i can take slowly (and not look supid?)

Accepted Answer

Start slow : Start with walking around the block daily for a week and the next week if you feel well walk around twice.  If it is cold outside go to a local mall early before the stores open and walk.  Often malls will open the doors for people to come walk early and there are not a lot of people at there at 7-8 in the morning.

See orthopedic Dr.: Hard to say.  Could be many causes- herniate disk, pinched nerve, muscular strain, etc.  See a Dr. to get answers asap rather than trying to wait it out or doctoring yourself
