my daughter (20) has had two low ferritin levels, she feels light headed often and she is now bruising all over. i was worried about the possibility of leukemia - but her cbc was normal when they did the iron studies?

: With "normal CBC" and symptoms of dizziness and bruising, get a referral to a hematology/oncologist for a more extensive evaluation and treatment recommendation.

i'm scared i have leukemia- would docs see anything from a simple iron/b12 blood test?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: A more complete blood test is probably necessary including CBC with differential and morphologic assessment.  This would show if there is an increased number of white blood cells including atypical cells or circulating blasts.  Ultimately, in most cases, an accurate and complete diagnostic and prognostic workup for leukemia relies on bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. Please consult your doctor.

my son is 21 yrs old. his iron is at 233 ug/dl. his bilirubin came back at 1.6 mg/dl. he does not take an iron suplt nor does he drink. is this # high for someone his age? would a person with leukemia come back with these numbers? it runs in family?

: The blood tests you have reported are not affected by Leukemia.
The mild elevation of bilirubin can run in families . it is considered harmless and not be pursued further.

can leukemia be misdiagnosed as iron deficiency anemia?

: Never say never, but aplastic anemia has low hemoglobin, low white cell count and low platelets. Iron deficiency generally has low hemoglobin and elevated platelet counts but normal white cell count.

i don't remember banging my hands, but i have a bruise on each? i'm not anemic. got my iron checked. leukemia?

Many things: Platelets need to be checked.  Could be related to medications.  I would suggest seeing your doctor.  Also depends on where the bruise is.  Hope this helps.

my daughter 14 had a blood test today the nurse said her last bloods were abnormal so the doctor ordered b12,iron and cbc for today. she has been having symptoms of leukemia . could this be why her bloods why abnormal?

: Although abnormal blood tests can arise from leukemia, at age 14, anemia or vitamin deficiencies can also produce abnormal blood tests. Follow up with a discussion with your daughter's physician about the details of the abnormalities found.

rbc count is 4.25 but not deficient in iron, b12 or folic. platelets are 67 (runs in family). im 31, dad (72) has leukemia. how concerned should i be?

Need for Hematologis: You need supervision and monitoring by a good hematologist. Your low platelet count worries me. I hope you do not have itp? Further, your hematologist should guide you. And yes, you should be concerned yet not panic.

if you are anemic from iron deficiency, does that put you at risk for leukemia? or is there some connection between anemia and leukemia? also, is leukemia hereditary? my mom gets iron deficient anemia and my grandma (her mom) died of leukemia?

: Iron is a necessary vitamin that is part of important enzyme activities in the body. It is also the limiting agent in successful creation of your blood. You lose iron daily shedding skin &amp; in other ways. Iron deficiency does cause anemia, but  deficiency does not trigger leukemia. Only very rare forms of leukemia have anything to do with  inherited genes.

i use to have lukemia, in 1990, now i have iron deficiency anemia  i have been  getting iron i'v for 7yrs they can't seem to figure out where the bleedi?

Not bleeding: These are several ways that you can be anemic and its not only from bleeding, you can either not make enough blood, you are loosing it (bleeding) or your body is eating you blood up.  Sometimes we get into habits and just keep doing the samething over and over, ask your doctor to take a good second look and perform new test and blood work.

i am worried about leukaemia, ferritin is high in 600's but normal iron and inflam markers. fbc's has been pretty normal, this week all blood cells were in range, blood film said 'neutrophils show left shift'  my worry is i have bone pain mnths 
help?

: Ferritin being high can be associated with inflammation. More details are needed. See a doctor that can see all the lab results
