why do fingernails and toenails turn white when they grow longer?

White Nails: Nails are held on to your fingers and toes by suction ( which gives it the pinkish color )....As the nail grows out past the end of the finger or toe, the nails color changes. Nails natural color is whiteish because they are translucent.

one of my toenails are almost no longer connected to the skin it wasnt injured or anything what could be causing this ?

: Is the mail “normal” looking being clear ? Does the mail have a fungus infection? Could the shoe have rubbed the nail? More information is needed. Not usual for a toe mail to just fall off. No other unusual signs or symptoms ? Have examination by podiatrist or family doctor.

the lower part of my leg, ankle, and all my toenails are a yellowish-orangish color. i noticed this about two days ago, not sure if its been longer. for around 1.5 years ive felt constipated (not getting all poop out), could these be related?

: The two are unlikely to be related. It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see a doctor. Wish you good health!

recently cut off part of toenail to try to treat ingrown nail,ended up detaching part of nail into skin,which is no longer visible.how do i treat this?

Soaking: may help soften that nail remnant making it easier to "reach" and remove HOWEVER it is possible you may need a little local anesthetic and an experienced PODIATRIST!  Contact your PCP (Primary Care Professional ) for a referral!

my friend has long toenails & went skiing all day & complains about her big toes burning and the skin just before the toenail is purple. no insurance.?

Maybe frostbite?: This sounds a bit like a mild case of frostbite. Of course it's not possible to really tell from the limited information and without seeing the foot. Was it really cold out? Did your friend take breaks to warm up? Keep the foot warm. A mild case of frostbite should recover, if that's what it is. Dress more warmly next time.

Basically YES: to height, but feet and noses can slowly grow over time. (also the end of the chin).

Nope: What will worrying accomplish? It is not uncommon for one foot to be slightly larger than the other. Obviously, when buying shoes always buy for the size of the larger foot.

Accepted Answer

It's cleansing: No harm done.  White vinegar diluted (1:4) is a home remedy for many things in the foot besides smelling a little "pickled", the vinegar is actually antimicrobial (great for minor cuts and abrasions), antifungal (great for athlete's foot) and is a keratolytic (great for calluses).

can my foot injury last longer than i was told or if there could be a more serious injury?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Sometimes  xrays could miss a subtle fracture or soft tissue damage such as ligament tears( lisfranc), tendon tears or cartilage damage.  A good clinical exam should detect this but at times a MRI or ct is needed when injuries last longer than they should on a compliant healthy person.  Ask your podiatrist if there is anything else that can be done or seek a second opinion.

Be seen: It you are saying your foot is cold and insensate, you need to be seen immediately to be evaluated for vascular insufficiency in your leg.
