what are some side effects of bell's palsy?

Can not blink: The worst side effect is the inability to close the eye to protect the cornea.  The cornea can dry out and get scratched, especially at night when you sleep with eye open.  Tape the eye lid closed with scotch tape, particularly when you sleep.  During the day, pull the lid down frequently to keep the cornea wet.  Other problems is biting inside of lip and cheek and dribbling liquids.

Commenting on: Western medications is not my area but I do suggest you ask your doc about seeing a physical therapist if your face still has some distortions.  The PT can suggest things like blowing up balloons or do some electrical stim on your face to help.  Peace and good health.

Uncommon: Bell's palsy is rare to begin with.  The chance of getting it a second time (on the same or the other side) is the same as it was the first time.  You do not have a unique or higher susceptibility to get this condition even though you got it once.

is the creepy crawling feeling with bell's palsy a side of recovery?

Accepted Answer

Yes: The facial nerve is severely damaged in bells palsy, but then has to recover and regrow.  As it regrows it will produce very strange sensations.  It may even regrow down wrong paths and cause strange outcomes (jaw - wink, etc).  This is normal course of recovery.

Very Unusual: Bell's palsy is idiopathic (no known cause) facial paralysis. It is highly unlikely to affect both sides of the face.. Either at the same time or delayed.

Some residual: paralysis might be permanent.  Consult with your neurologist for referral to a physical therapist, who might be able to help minimize impairment.

Common: It is common to have sensory complaints and some pain with bell's palsy and during the recovery from it.

Yes: It can feel that way, but if so also need to think about any problems with the trigeminal (5th cranial) nerve that gives sensation to that area of the face as well as the facial (7th cranial) nerve that is affecting the muscles of that side of the face with a true Bell's palsy.

hello, i was diagnosed with bells palsy in the left side of my face last week and now ive noticed a loss of feeling in the left side of my body as well. could this be a side effect of the disease?

Unlikely.  : Bell’s Palsy is a condition where one side of the face becomes paralyzed over a period of a day or 2.  Most cases are caused by a herpesvirus infection, including Herpes simplex and Herpes zoster (chickenpox virus). Some cases are caused by the bacteria responsible for Lyme Disease.

Not likely to affect you entire left body.  That may be caused by an entirely different condition. See a doctor

Bell's palsy...no: is a  temporary facial paralysis or weakness resulting from damage or trauma to the facial nerve (CN VII). This makes half of your face appear to droop. Your smile and frown is one-sided.
