Liver failure: It's hard to say without knowing all the facts, but my guess is that she overdosed on tylenol (acetaminophen) and developed acute liver failure. When that happens, patients can develop cerebral edema and elevated intracranial pressure which can cause all sorts of neurologic impairments including blindness.

Wow, I'm sorry: Hi. Is he at UIHC? I hope so. Diabetes can cause kidney failure. Liver failure can cause kidney failure, but neither diabetes nor kidney failure per se cause liver failure. Do you know the cause of the liver failure? He is obviously very sick. Hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst. I'm so sorry. Best to him, you, and your family.

NO!: Surely there is one or more doctors caring for your mother and they should be discussing this with you. If that is not happening you must contact an ambulance to get Mother to the nearest Emergency Facility!!                            This is no doubt a big issue for you. The Emergency team will not ignore you but will do what they can for you.

Definitely: You need your liver to live.  It's the master biochemist in the body; makes proteins, bile, clotting factors, detoxifies drugs, chemicals, poisons, etc. Death from liver failure usually is not pretty; can be associated with abdominal fluid collection (ascites), which can get infected, altered mental status (with or without coma), weight loss, bleeding from varicose veins of esophagus stomach, etc.

Many: Confusion, skin color and the eyes turn yellow, there is a change to very dark urine(coca cola color) then belly might enlarge with fluid, the legs can begin to swell. If any of these are suspected please see your doctor immediately.
