Liver cell injury: AST and ALT are liver enzymes that go up in blood when liver cells are injured. Common causes are alcohol, obesity, hepatitis and drug reactions. If you drink alcohol, stop entirely. If you are overweight, lose weight. If you take medications, talk to your doctor about those. Additional tests may be needed as well.

Doubt: UNLIKELY.  THOSE ARE MILD EELEVATIONS AND I DO NOT THINK INDICATIVE OF CIRRHOSIS.  IF YOU THINK THERE IS MORE OF A PROBLEM YOUR Doctor can order ultrasound.  An elevated ammonia and PT/INR .are associated with cirrhossis.

Need a workup: Congratulations on your weight loss. You need to address the possible causes of the elevated liver enzymes. You may be asked to repeat the test off all medications and alcohol. If still up, we'll rule in-or-out hepatitis B and C, hemochromatosis, Wilson's, autoimmunity. This may simply be metabolic syndrome, perhaps best managed with a return to a fitness-focused lifestyle -- yours is a good start

Reverse risk factors: Fatty liver is incredibly common, predominantly due to: high alcohol intake, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity. The more of these risks you have, the greater the chance of fatty liver. Addressing these risks is an important step to correcting fatty liver. Distinguish hepatosteatosis (fatty liver) from steatohepatitis (fatty liver with abnormal liver tests that risks cirrhosis &amp; liver cancer).

alt (sgpt) = 767

these are 10-20 times the normal values.  these values have been elevated for 20 days.  does this mean i have permanent liver damage?

Usually not!: But what is the cause for these increases.  Many viral infections can temporarily do this. Medications, etc.  But has the doctor you see narrowed the cause?
