Varies: Depends on size and number of fragments. They will check you with x-rays.

i just had lithotripsy for an 8 mm stone. another stone at 5 mm remains. should it be removed?  if so, what is the wait time between lithotripsies?

Ask your MD: If you're taking tamsulosin, you should pass that fragment without surgery. 6 weeks before you should get another lithotripsy. Your urologist also may do a ureteroscopy this time for improved chances of clearing that fragment.

2nd time kidney stones w/in 10mos. 1x: 3mm-stuck in l distal ureter & 6mm-l kidney. 2x: 5mm & 2mm-l kidney & 5mm-r kidney. do i get lithotripsy again?

Possibly: Lithotripsy's results depend on the size and location of the stones along the urinary tract. However, equally importantly, you need to be investigated to figure out why you are having recurrent stones, and take appropriate measures like increased water intake (and, possibly other medications) that should reduce your risk of future stones.

i had a stent put in a few dys ago. i have a kdney stone .i am 2 have a lithotripsy in 5 dys. i was told i could exercise. can i do squats safely?

Not a good idea : Ureteral stents course right along the psoas muscle, a powerful muscle that allows you to flex at the hip. Repeated squats may cause the stent to irritate the ureter and cause bleeding or pain. Exercises that that cause hip flexion are not a good choice while a stent is in. Hope this helps.

110lb/47 yo, drink approx. 120oz of water a day and 2-3 small cups of coffee. urine output is 4-4.5l. mild/moderate exercise. unexplained palpitations low hr and pulse since lithotripsy and cdiff two years ago. is this water intake safe? labs normal?

: Re heart and pulse pl see a cardiologist. Till then hold off on coffee. You can also reduce your fluid intake a bit and then follow cardiologists advice.

what are some advantages of lithotripsy?

Quicker recovery: In the old days, we did open surgery for stones where we made an incision and removed the stone. You were typically in the hospital a few days and had to recover from the incision. With eswl, you are normally treated as an outpatient and able to return to work in a couple of days.

why do they knock you out for a lithotripsy?

Pain from procedure: Shock waves are typically applied through an interface brought into direct contact with the skin of the flank region on the side of interest.  When shock waves are delivered, they can be quite uncomfortable.  Anesthesia is needed to keep the patient comfortable, but also to help the patient stay still so that the shock waves can remain focused on the stone to maximize the chances of fragmenting it

ESWL: Eswl treatment is performed under sedation on an outpatient  basis.  There will be some mild post-procedure discomfort and some blood in the urine.  Passage of fragments may cause pain requiring narcotic analgesia.
