Usually we monitor kidney &amp; thyroid function while people take lithium in the usual forms prescribed. Probably these same tests should be done periodically if you take orotate

It could be toxic: Psychiatrists usually prescribe lithium carbonate, which is better studied.  Orotate is sold as a dietary supplement and contains more lithium than the carbonate salt, about 4x more by weight.  Lithium in general can be dangerous with numerous serious potential adverse reactions blood levels are monitored as well as clinical issues.  Only take lithium under a competent doctor's care.

POssibly safe: There are no absolute contraindications, but there may be some risk of your mood switching to mania or hypomania, or even into a mixed mood or rapid cycling state. There is to date no evidence that antidepressants alone or with lithium cure bipolar depression, talk to your psychiatrist about other options such as Latuda (lurasidone) which is approved for the treatment of bipolar depression alone or with lith.

Depends on you: If you check the full prescribing information for the medication or medications in question, you can find the answer for just about any combination.  There are also medication interaction checkers on-line.  Depending on dosing, I often check an ECG if I prescribe lithium and Celexa (citalopram) in the same patient.  No absolute contraindication.

Yes in low doses: Pharmaceutical forms of lithium can be hazardous and should be used with caution. However, lithium orotate is much safer and generally taken in much lower doses (10-20 mg/day) vs. 900-1800 mg of prescription forms.
