can you tell me about using ssd with lidocaine cream for tattoo healing?

Wont change healing: I perform a lot of laser tattoo removal and always recommend my patients use either cetaphil or aquaphor 3x a day until the tattoo is healed. Normally 3-7 days. There is not a lot of post laser pain so the need for topical anesthesia isn't really there. Ice packs, Motrin tylenol (acetaminophen) all are fine as long as you can take them. It is possible to overdose with the constant application of lido.

99.9% lidocaine?: I am not sure what you bought. 99.9% lidocaine would likely be a powder that a drug manufacturer would use make lidocaine for topcial use or injections. Too much lidocaine, even if you apply ti just to your skin can kill you by causing your heart to beat abnormally. Don't risk it. Go to your doctor and ask him to have a small amount of topical medication that you can use with each treatment.

Avoid that: If the pain of a tattoo makes you want an anesthetic perhaps you should realize that you are going to cause pain to your self.  Appeal to your own common sense and consider avoiding increased exposure to hepatitis.  Number one cause of hepatitis and liver transplants come from tattoos.  It is a form of self mutilation and you may want to reconsider.

Tattoo: What do you mean already started? Lidocaine/prilocaine cream (emla) is a topical anesthetic. It can be used on the tattoo during the tattooing process (although it takes about 45 - 60 minutes under occlusion to work.) it can be used prior to putting a tattoo on or taking a tattoo off with a laser. Although usually when we use a laser to take off a tattoo we injest local anesthetic.

No problem.: It will numb the skin and will wear off in an hour or so. As long as you do not exceed recommended dosage there is no long term effect.

Not practical: Emla (lidocaine and prilocaine) takes at least 30 minutes to work and then the anesthetic only lasts about a half hour, and the pain relief is incomplete at best.  An average sized tattoo takes about 2 hours, so if you want to get your tattoo in one sitting, emla's not going to be that helpful.  If you can't stand the pain of the tattoo, you probably shouldn't be getting one.

Depends: What is result of liver enzyme test? Most people are not affected by lidocaine. Tattoo, if not done using sterile technique may transmit hepatitis and that will affect liver enzymes. Contaminants in ink, including bacteria may also affect liver function. I would urge you to not engage in self-mutilation called tattooing.

Yes: Topical anesthetic will decrease pain of a tattoo but not totally. When removing tattoos by laser, Lidocaine is injected into th skin to decrease pain.

: To reduce the pain of epilation and laser, there are several options. Using topical anesthetic such as lidocaine is one. Lidocaine works by blocking nerve signals in the body, which reduces the sensation of pain. Ibuprophen and Tylenol help. It is important to use lidocaine as directed and to follow all safety precautions. Being drunk does not help!
