is prozac (fluoxetine) effective for generalized anxiety disorder? i just switched from lexapro to prozac today. i also have ocd and have had panic disorder in the past. lexapro worked well for me but i gained 100 pounds. thank you?

: Both medications are belong to the SSRI group and they are both used for GAD. Weight loss is much more common than weight gain with Fluoxetine.

i'm switching from 5mg of lexapro (escitalopram) to 20mg of prozac. dr told me to take both the lexapro (escitalopram) and prozac together for a week, then stop the lexapro (escitalopram).  is it safe to take both together for a week?

If you have ADHD -: Primarily Inattentive Type &amp;  comorbid  anxiety &amp;/or depression, you need multimodal treatment for optimal management. Add Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy &amp; environmental manipulations at work &amp; home, including  ADA accommodations. See CHADD.org. Strattera (atomoxetine) has a serotonin effect. Use caution when adding SSRI's. Discuss med management with your psychiatrist &amp; seek referral to a psychologist.

It's not like that: You're comparing apples and oranges. Different medications with different mechanisms don't have equivalent doses. Most medications have a usual starting dose which has been shown to have reasonable efficacy and tolerability. Then the dose is adjusted according to clinical response. You can't say, "This much of this one is the same as that much of that one." It doesn't work that way.

: There can be drug interactions between these three medicines, particularly between the Lexapro and the Prozac. They can be used at the same time, but I need to be closely observed by the person who is doing the prescribing. Do not put yourself on this medication’s together, and be sure to let the prescribing physician know that you were taking the other medications. Good luck.

Lexapro/Prozac: Possible since every person's tolerance differs from another. When Lexapro (escitalopram) first came out, it was the improved form of celexa, with less stomach & bowel side-effects, but I have seen patients that can tolerate different ssri's differently. Your doctor can give you good suggestions regarding switch.

No: The food and drug administration instructions recommends that one not use alcohol with antidepressant medication.  Discuss this with your doctor.
