It can have characteristics which suggest that it is harmless or that it may be cancerous and need further workup. This comment means that it is probably harmless, but they cannot say with 100% certainty what it is exactly without doing another test. I would consult with your doctor to decide if additional testing is truly necessary.

in 2007 i was told i had a lesion on one kidney & a cyst on the other. since then i never followed up on it, nor was i told to. if anything was to come of that, would it have done so by now?

: Benign "cysts" (fluid filled with low density) are common in kidneys, and not generally needful of biopsy or removal.  Always consult a nephrology physician for interpretation of the ultrasound results, however.

Kidney: A simple cyst on the kidney is of no concern. A lesion could be any abnormal finding, including a cyst.  The important distinction would be if the radiologist called it a mass.  Discuss details with your doctor. You can get some blood and urine tests as well.   Further imaging like a ct scan can also evaluate for stones and ureteral problems.
