GO TO ER If: if you are obese or sedentary, have new onset calf pain with redness/swelling /pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, anxiety, bluish skin. These could be signs not of cancer but a clot traveling from leg to lung which is a pulmonary embolism. Life threatening. Please seek medical attention immediately. You are describing classic signs. Hard to guess: One's life expectancy is hard to tell even for the doctors who are taking care of the patient in-person. Life expectancy is not something we can guess on a free, public forum. With very advanced disease, the goal is to have better days during the remaining days, weeks, or months. The goal is not to live longer, but rather to live in more comfort to better enjoy the remaining time.

See below: Depending on where and how advanced the cancer is, shoulder pain may be due to bone metastases (worse with movement) or due to pleural or phrenic nerve involvement (usually worse with deep breaths). Lung cancer by itself doesn't hurt. Hope this helps.

Seek Palliative care: A good pain specialist can control your pain. So you must seek medical advice from a palliative care specialist. Alternatively ask for help from a Pain specialist(they are available in every hospital whereas Pall. care expertise is not always available in smaller hospitals.

is it possible to have lymphoma & lung cancer at the same time? are diseases related? would severe, painful swelling of foot,ankle,& leg be a symptom?

Yes: It is definitely possible, however it is more likely that if someone has lymphoma and a mass is found in the lung that it is a lesion from the lymphoma rather than a true " lung cancer". But both are possible.  Biopsy would surely differentiate between the two.

Difficult to say: I'm sorry to hear about your uncle. We try to refrain from "predicting" when an individual may succumb to an illness because truly there are too many factors coming into play.  That being said, usually palliative care referrals imply that the patient is not expected to survive more than 6-12 weeks more. We don't have crystal balls and frequently patients surprise us.

my dad has severe water retention with swollen ankles and legs.  he was just diagnosed with lung cancer.  how can he be helped with the endema?

Elevation: You dad is in a difficult position and he has my sympathies.  Lung disease can be difficult.  He should speak to his physician to see if diuretics might help, but in th meantime, he can elevate his legs to help minimize the fluid retention.

Hard to say/depends.: At this stage of lung cancer, the options are limited as is survival.  If treatment is done , it's usually chemotherapy and radiation and/or surgery after adjuvant chemotherapy.  There are certainly trials out there and i would recommend talking to your doctor before starting any, but the chance for success is likely limited, as the 5 year survival of stage IV is <5%, but it doesn't hurt to try.
