what could be causing my foot pain and swelling on the top of my left foot? it hursts all day with no relief, and i did not enjure the foot.

Stress fracture: There are lots of reasons for insidious foot pain (pain for no apparent reason). Most common is a stress fracture. Most people do not remember any injury. Other reasons can be tendinitis, gout, neuritis or an infection. I would rest, ice and see my favorite podiatrist for an x-ray.

Hard to say: There are many causes of pain in the foot without any apparent trauma.  Without knowing more about your boy's health history and getting a look at his tootsie, i'd be misleading you with any specific answers.

It's always safest and best to bring it in to a podiatrist, perhaps get an x-ray, and know for certain.  Hope your boy feels better and good luck!

A test for a blood: Clot would be a venous duplex or ultrasound not a blood test.

See a doctor: There are many causes of foot pain, but without more history, it is difficult to even suggest what could be causing your pain.  If it has been present for more than a few days, or if you had an injury, i would definitely suggest seeing a physician.  If you didn't have an injury, and the pain has been present for less than 48 hours, you could wait a day or two to see if it will go away.

Need to be seen.: With symptoms you are having, the appropriate treatment would require a detailed examination and history. If there is no history of trauma, the vascular as well as neurological systems are suspect. There is also the possibility of a unresolved stress fracture. To remove all doubt, have a foot specialist evaluate your symptoms.

Many things: It depends on where your pain is. When one foot hurts enough for you to change the way you walk, even a little, then the other foot may start hurting from the abnormal stress from your altered gait. See a podiatrist.
