Differentiating among the causes can direct an appropriate treatment plan.  Get an eye exam by an ophthalmologist to determine the cause of your tearing.

Nasolacrimal issue: You might have insufficiency of lacrimal tear drainage. This can be easily assessed by your eye care physician. The rx is based on whatever is the true cause.

Massage the Corners!: You may have a lash stuck in the lacrimal gland also known as the tear duct. If that is the case, then simple massaging of the duct, located in the corner of your eye may provide relief. If the tearing continues, you may have allergies or infection in the eye known as conjunctivitis or pink eye, and you need to see your doctor right away!

hello, i have had my left eye watering constantly for perhaps a week now, and wiping away tears/discharge has now irritated the skin around my eye. also, it has been painful to press on the inside corner of my eye for quite a few weeks, and i am unsure if this is related. i thought this could be allergies as my head does feel stuffy intermittently, but my new red eye socket (not the eye itself) has motivated me to ask.

: You have an obstructed and possibly infected tear drainage system (dacryocystitis). The tears drain via tiny openings at the inside corner of each lid into a sac under the skin at the inside corner and then into the nasal cavity. You might feel a nodule when you press the inside corner. This has to be treated often with oral antibiotics along with eye drops, and sometimes a minor procedure.

Allergy vs. pink eye: You may have pink eye especially if there is some redness and mild discomfort (gritty feeling or pain) is present. Allergies are more likely in both eyes, though but can present with similar symptoms. If there is any history of eye injury, you will need to have your eye looked at immediately. Cool compresses may help. Visine eye drops may help allergic and pink eye discomfort.

Blocked tear duct: If this has been constant from birth it may be the duct between the corner of the eye to the inside part of the nose is blocked. Using an eye ointment to massage this area of his eye may help. Sometimes these little guys require surgery at about 1 year of age if it fails to open. All the best.

See Opthalmologist:  Any loss or change in your vision can indicate that something serious is going on. You should see an Opthalmologist which is an MD specifically trained in eye diseases. They can do an in depth exam of all the components of your eye to determine what is going on. You should be sure not to drive until you have been treated, as depth perception can be affected and cause you to have an accident.

Allergy or irritant: It's either an allergy or an irritant effect. In time both eyes are likely to be affected. Try changing brands - perhaps to a hypoallergenic brand. If that doesn't work & of you still want to wear makeup you will want to see a good board-certified allergist or dermatologist.
