i had a colonoscopy/endoscopy and two ct scans. so far i know i have a fatty mass infiltrating the wall in my cecum and thinking of the descending & sigmoid and thickening of left adrenal. i have symptoms as well. just curious what this could be?

Speak with your doc: Adrenal gland nodules are very common and frequently are benign meaning they cause no harm.  "incidentalomas" may have certain characteristics on an MRI that indicate they are benign.

Additionally, blood tests may be warranted elucidate what type of nodule you have.  This is nothing to worry about but definitely speak with your physician.

Many: Most, less than 3 cm can be watched as they are unlikely to be cancers. However, some small tumors can make excess cortisol, aldosterone, male hormones or adrenalin. See an endocrinologist.

Maybe nothing: A mass on the adrenal is sometimes found incidentally during a ct scan for something else.  Questions to ask:  is it making too much hormone, such as cortisol (causing cushing's syndrome) or adrenaline (causing pheochromocytoma).  Is it large, or expanding, and therefore a cancer risk?  If the mass is small, not enlarging, and not secreting anything, it is probably nothing to worry about.

: The radiologist gets fussed at if they say they found nothing unusual. This translates to they found nothing unusual. All such studies must be evaluated by the doc who ordered them in the context of your full history and exam.

There is no: Way to determine that without having a medical evaluation -- but adrenal masses rarely cause pain. See your doctor.

It can't hurt: Since i don't know anything about your condition or the findings of the first evaluation, it's impossible to say,  may sure you've had the appropriate lab tests, x-rays, etc.  It never hurst to seek a second opinion from a qualified physician, particularly when you have concerns.

i have a right adrenal mass with a history of cancer.  should i be concerned that my new endocrinologist isn't worried about it?

Accepted Answer

Maybe: With a history of cancer, any bump or lump is scary.  But most little adrenal nodules are not cancer.  At the very least, it should be followed closely with surveillance imaging.  Consider asking for input from a doctor that helped you with your prior cancer.  As always, if you don't feel good about information you are getting from your doctor, don't hesitate to seek a 2nd opinion.
