Cold Tips: For sore throat – gargle with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz of water). * For congestion – saline nose drops or a neti pot. *For anti-inflammatory effect &amp; mobilizing mucus- homemade chicken noodle soup.**For hydration- lots of water. Try clear broth. * Add honey &amp; a small amt. of lemon juice to Chamomile tea.

Asthma meds: During a cold your asthma may worsen. An asthma action plan should be written by your doctor. The forms are available on line. The albuterol is used to treat cough, wheezing, shortness of breath. A controller medication is used to prevent and control worsening your asthma.
Cold preparations do not treat asthma, and generally should be used sparingly. Nasal saline can relieve your congestion.

Yes.: Cough medicines may cause drowsiness, and may make you feel lightheaded,  medications that contain Diphenhydramine are more commonly known for this.  Other medications can be mild sedatives, that make you sleepy, can cause dry mouth... etc...

OK.: Unless this was stored way out of conditions of temperature or humidity you should be just fine.  Expiration dates are extended for a variety of reasons on most meds.

Saline & humidifier: Saline nasal spray is very beneficial to treat a cold in a baby. It is very safe as it is made of salt water. A cool mist humidifier with water is also a great natural decongestant and really helps thin the mucousy coughs. Unfortunately, cold medications are not recommended for babies as they may cause dangerous side effects (and most do not work very well for them anyway!).

Sure: Every single medicine has risks and benefits. If the risk does not outweigh the benefit, you should not use the medicine. As far as cold meds, they have a lot of side effects, especially in kids. The benefits are limited, as no medicine is going to cure a cold. It just might reduce symptom a bit. So using alternative treatments like warm fluids, humidity and saline rinse much better way to go.

Usually in babies: we try to use nasal saline drops for nasal congestion. if coughing or sneezing see her pediatrician. however Tylenol (acetaminophen) would be safe to use

Yes.: That's part of the reason otc cold meds are not recommended for small children.

Possibly: Mild COVID 19 respiratory symptoms may respond to cold medications.  Good meds to have on hand include acetaminophen  and a decongestant like pseudoephedrine  (If you don't have hypertension) . Saline can be used for nasal irrigation.

Yes, but...: ...You never want to take more medication than you need. The other ingredients will likely not be harmful, but cough suppressants and antihistamines can make you tired and slow your reflexes, and the pain relievers can hurt your liver if you're also taking other pain relievers that will add to your total dose. Decongestants alone are also available from your pharmacist without a prescription.
