You need to feel ...: ...confident about your surgeon.  In general, higher qualified physicians practice at academic medical centers such as UC Davis, but sometimes they are more interested in teaching/research. Private practice physicians are more often in tune with satisfying their patients. Try to review each potential surgeon's professional history; if he/she is qualified, then whoever you feel best with. Good luck

Very Very small: The FDA estimates the chance of a fibroid being cancer (at the time of a myomectomy or hysterectomy for a benign fibroid) to be about 1 in 350.  That is still very very low odds.

Size/symptoms: Fibroids that are greater than a 12 week size uterus(3 month pregnancy size equivalent) will put pressure on the bladder and surrounding organs. Additionally, fibroids that are symptomatic producing pain or excessive bleeding are surgical candidates. Surgery choices can include removal of the fibroids only(myomectomy) if considering further children  or hysterectomy(uterine removal if not.

Maybe: It is always difficult to decide when to remove fibroids as they are so common. Most are not causing symptoms and have been reported to be present in up to 75% of all women. They may interfere with pregnancy, labor and delivery, cause increased bleeding and/or pain and it is at that point that a decision to remove the fibroid (myomectomy) is made. Is it painful enough to risk surgery?

Fibroid size ?'s: Fibroids (leiomyomata) usually do not occur as solitary tumors. The size mentioned is "medium", and by itself does not present a problem.  If irregular bleeding, infertility, or chronic pelvic pain, discomfort is experienced, consult your gyn provider for available solutions.

Depends: Fibroids can be from 1 inch to 8 inches, however the symptoms of the fibroid are more important.  Does it cause significant bleedign or pain. Also, is it growing rapidly?
Generally, 80% of fibroids do not need to be treated.

6 cm fibroid: In order to answer this for you, an exam and consult with gyn surgeon is needed. On average a 6 cm uterine fibroid can be surgically removed or coiled via artery supply to allow for pregnancy. If fertility is no longer desired then observation is fine, as long as you are not symptomatic. Take a friend/family with you to consult to help in asking questions. Good luck and be well.
