Rest first: Ice down the tendon, take a nonsteroid if able, rest and avoid stairs, bikes, jumping jacks. When better do quad sets and isometrics.  Avoid things that hurt even 24 hours later.

Tendonitis: Pain and swelling at the anterior knee, worse with getting up from a seated position, worse with stairs, squats, lunges, etc. May have some localized warmth, numbness, or tingling.

Imaging studies: You seem young for "bone on bone" disease (AKA advanced arthritis). Xrays would be helpful as an initial screening imaging study to check for arthritis of your knee. If it is tendinitis, the majority of the time it is patellar tendinitis and is usually physical therapy responsive (with or without additional help with NSAIDs which are medications like ibuprofen, naprosyn).
