Knee pain after fall: You must have received some internal knee trauma.  Pain lasting this long is of concern.  Have your doctor recheck you for internal knee injury.  You may need an mri.

Probably: A good idea particularly if it is not getting better and you are having trouble bearing weight or walking.  Initially try ice, nsaids, crutch or cane and an ace wrap or brace to see if it helps if it is not better in 48 hours you might want to see a doc for an exam.

The problem could be a small bone fracture, tendon or ligament issue, soft tissue swelling, etc. So, if this continues, you need to see a doctor for evaluation and treatment. Probably a meniscus: A meniscus tear will commonly cause catching, sharp episodic pain and can often be asymptomatic for long stretches of time.
Rehab exercises, bracing can be helpful. Interestingly, recent study of "sham" surgery suggests that arthroscopic surgery may not be that beneficial.

Ice.: You shoulde use ice, rather than heat. Ice reduces pain and inflammation. You can take an over the counter anti-inflammatory med that should help.

Mri: Xrays only show the bone and as such are not terribly sensitive.  Consider requesting an MRI if you are still having problems.  An MRI shows soft tissues and will show if you have torn a ligament in your knee, where an X-ray of that patient might be normal.
