Probably a meniscus: A meniscus tear will commonly cause catching, sharp episodic pain and can often be asymptomatic for long stretches of time. Rehab exercises, bracing can be helpful. Interestingly, recent study of "sham" surgery suggests that arthroscopic surgery may not be that beneficial.

Nerve irritation: possible. The best is to have a complete physical exam to see what is going on in your lower back, your hips, your knees, your feet & have the doctor assess this. In the UK, a physiotherapist is the 1 to check this out.In the US, it's the neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM) specialist, who is a D.O., doctor of osteopathic medicine to evaluate & treat. If unsuccessful, can refer to pain specialist.
