can high dose cefelexin (1.5 g/day for a year) cause kidney problems or any other complications/side effects? my dr wants to start me on this for recurrent kidney infections but i just want to better understand the risks first?

: This is unusual treatment for recurrent or persistent urinary tract infection, but may be appropriate if your doctor has a good understanding of the nature of the infection and best treatment. It would be appropriate to see an infectious diseases specialist (or in UK, a genitourinary medicine [GUM] physician) if you haven't yet done so. Cephalexin has few side effects, kidney damage unlikely.

bun/creatinine ratio is very high in kidney infections?

Accepted Answer

Generally no: An elevated bun/creatinine ratio (>20) is usually suggestive of "dehydration" and improves with increased fluids.  Unless the patient with a kidney infection is also fluid depleted (due to vomiting or diminished fluid intake), the bun/creatinine is not excessively elevated in this setting.

Kidney infection: Means an upper tract issue -- flank pain and fever.  More serious than just a bladder infection.  Get seen and cultured and get on appropriate antibiotics.

my dr told me that the hydronephrosis puts me at a high risk for developing kidney infections. how high is this risk and is there anything i can do do reduce tbe risk?

Depends upon cause: Risk of UTI with hyronephrosis(hn) is only significant if hn is associated with bladder reflux or u have past history of utis. Otherwise not.  Risk of developing UTI low if cause is congenital blockage. Ur already 30 years-old & obstruction has been present a long time. U may need antibiotics if hn was found after uti.Shower & don't bathe, avoid constipation, cotton & no thong underwear, pee often.

er said had kidney infection and if i get high fever i need to go back.  what is considered a high fever ? any other reasons id need to go back?

Kidney infection: Fever of10.4, while not high should cause you to go back to the er.If you get lower back flank pain should also be a sign for a return visit.

Kidney weakness: If I have your weight and creatinine i can give you a better answer. But, slight increase may be expected if you have a muscular build ( athletic or body building history). If so, you may actually have normal kidney function despite mildly depressed gfr. High CRP means inflammation somewhere like crohn's. This info does not suggest infection or kiney failure. But chronic kidney disease is possible.

urine came back with high wbc. i don't have uti or kidney infection so what else could it be?

UTI: White blood cells in the urine indicate a urinary tract infection (uti), usually a bladder infection (cystitis) but sometimes a kidney infection (pyelonephritis).  In the face of that finding, i don't see how you can "be sure" you don't have a UTI or kidney infection, i think you actually do.  See a doctor and get further evaluated and treated.

can you have extreme sweating with a kidney infection and if i have wbc count of 30 is that considered high.

It's high: If by '30' you mean 30, 000, that's extremely high.  If you have a kidney infection, are sweating, and have a WBC of 30, 000, you should be seen by a doctor right away.

high blood pressure. i've never had anything but normal, i have a uti kidney infection and anxiety. could these cause high blood pressure?

YES: How high has it gone? High end of normal is 130/80. Yes the anxiety can cause your pressure to vary so finish the treatment for the UTI and try to relax.
