i got a night gaurd to help with my tmj n clenching, but it is making my jaw pain almost unbearable during the night. why isnt it helping?

TMJ night guard: Please see your dentist for a personally fitted night guard if you are using an over the counter one.  Consider biofeedback treatment from a clinical psychologist to learn how to relax the muscles involved.  Peace and good health.

Cavities/infection: the sweet sour taste with alcohol may be triggered pain in the jaw arising from cavity or cavities that got too deep close to the nerve,or and inflamed gums that got more irritated, examination needed to determine the cause and treat it.

got 6 fillings 10 days ago. ever since, had a headache on one side for first 3 days, every night i have jaw pain on both sides. caused by fillings?

Possibly: It may be as simple as a bite adjustment.  Or one or more of the teeth may have nerve damage.  Or one or more teeth may be fractured.  We can't examine you.  Please return to your Dentist for examination and treatment or referral.

Variable: All depends upon the type of guards and your initial and current condition. If these were prescribed and adjusted by a dentist, then i would expect close timely follow-up (days, not weeks) immediately after delivery. As the jaw position changes, these need to be adjusted. The change in opening can be too much for the system, and you can get worse. See your dentist. Should improve in weeks.

how long does it take for my bruxism night guard to alleviate the jaw pain?

Fairly quickly: Bruxing can cause pain in several different ways, from temporary spasms of the muscles related to chewing to arthritis of the tmj.   If the primary pain is due to muscle strain,  within a week you should feel better.   If the night guard is not working after that,  you may need to adjust or modify the night guard.  Make a followup appointment with your dentist in case it doesn't help.

Asked and Answered: You may be in fact clenching or grinding at night. Wear facets on the incisal edges and occlusal surfaces of your teeth are a telltale sign. A bruxism guard may be in order. See your dentist,

: It would be prudent to visit your dentist as grinding your teeth at night can leave a telltale mark. The dentist may be able to fashion a mouth guard that you could use at night.

YES!: Pain &amp;/or bleeding &amp;/or swelling are red flags that there is something dramatically wrong.  A small cavity is painless, a large deep cavity is painful as the infection spreads.  Don't wait.  Call your Dentist now.  Could be transient like an erupting wisdom tooth, or could be something chronic and serious.  Go for an examination.

Review: Have your specialist Orthodontist or treating General Dentist review your occlusion to make sure there are no prematuraties/interferences.  Discuss anti-inflammatories. Discuss temporary night guard, such as sports mouth guard, as teeth settle in.

been suffering from tmj disorder for the past 7-8 monthsdue to teeth grinding, my teeth would hurt,started wearing a night guard, teeth were completely all these months until recently,extreme jaw pain, got better with meds, but how can i fix this?

: It will be best if you can see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon with experience in managing TMD. There are several procedures which could be done for relieving the chronic pain so you do not have to rely on daily medications (trigger point muscle injections,  botulinum toxin injections, intraarticular injections, or surgery, such as arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, arthroplasty or TMJ reconstruction)
