Useful: Walking 10k steps per day is a very useful exercise.  There is a correlation between exercise of that type and longevity.  I am not sure if that is the primary reason the japanese have such a long lifespan but perhaps that story is true.

Same as US: The treatment for asthma , to the best of my knowledge, is not different from the us regardless of the cause. In the old days, the japanese used to use gold to treat asthma but this has never been adapted in the us and mostly abandoned.

Could be normal: Losing 18 pounds in 4 months with increased activity and possibly dietary change may be normal, especially if you were sedentary before.  I don't know where you moved from or how you were eating previously, but typical japanese diets differ greatly from those in the us.  They generally eat more vegetables, lean proteins, etc, than we do.  Personally seeing a physician may provide answers for you.

Pharma decision: Studies with Amlexanox in treating asthma including Aspirin sensitive asthma have been published in japanese medical journals since 1989.   I suspect a pharmaceutical company is not confident enough to perform studies in the U.S. To satisfy the fda (food and drug administration).  It is very expensive to bring a drug to market.

There is ample use of fish, soy, vegetables, seaweed, fruit, noodles / rice &amp; green tea. Japanese often take more time over a meal. They tend to walk or cycle as opposed to driving everywhere.
