Peek A Boo!!: Yes, as long as it's in the back of his throat and not hanging from his ear. A small percentage of people have an epiglottis that peeks up from the back of the tongue. That's OK as long as it's not causing any disturbing symptoms, like a foreign body sensation or chronic inflammation and pain.

Not yet: The epiglottis does connect to the trachea and esophagus. There have been a small # of trachea transplants with tracheas built out of artificial structures filled in with stem cells from the same patient - this means they don't have to be concerned about rejection.

what is the epiglottis?

See below: It is a small piece of tissue just behind the base of the tongue in the throat. It's basically a lid with a hinge. Its purpose is to covert the top of the trachea (windpipe) when you swallow so that the contents in your mouth go down your esophagus and not the trachea into your lungs. That would cause choking and risk infection like pneumonia or other damage to the lungs.

Epiglottis ; gagging: Hello. Manipulating you base of tongue, uvula, tonsils or epiglottis will probably cause gagging. There is a rich supply of sensory receptors in this region that helps our body sense the pathway of food. If it feels altered, gagging will occur which protects our airway.

Self cleaning: If you have a feeling of food stuck in the epiglottis, it is likely something other than food. Epiglottis would clean itself by inducing cough and swallowing. If the feeling persists, please see your doctor for an examination.

Not normal.: You might have strep throat, but Amoxicillin should take care of it.  Other things can cause it too, such as diphtheria, so show it to your doctor.

Interesting: I wonder why you have never seen your epiglottis before. If you open your mouth and depressed the tongue it is easy to see. I'm sure it has been there your whole life and if you have no problems with swallowing, stay cool &amp; relax.
