is there a difference between mirtazapine and amitriptyline in terms of effectiveness for pain and sleep?

No direct answer: These are 2 different drugs.  Again, there is "no better than" or "as good as".  Treatment of any disorder should be individualized.  I would think that Remeron (mirtazapine) is more often prescribed for sleep disorders where as Amitriptyline is more often prescribed for pain when talking about these 2 conditions specifically.

i took remeron (mirtazapine) as sleep aid for 9 years, but it stop working, amitriptyline doesn't help, don't want aps, wondering if trimipramin or doxepin could help?

Herbs also work!: Try to taper off your present prescription medication. There are excellent homeopathic and alternative medicine , herbs, reading a good book, or i always recommended listening to a lecture  you like, it worked perfect for a lot of my patients. If stress and anxiety are present those must be dealt with. Sleep is extremely important for us. Try fir few homeopathic products and see what happens, .

does elavil or tofranil help with sleep along with depression thinking of changing my remeron (mirtazapine) because still depressed and massive weight gain?

Elavil? Remeron (mirtazapine)?: Elavil (amitriptyline) and tofranil (imipramine) are both sedating antidepressants. These  can also contribute to weight gain, however. It is essential to speak with your prescribing doc so you can discuss your current sxs and side effects and determine the best plan for you going forward.

Work w/ your Dr: ever a good idea to stop psych meds w/out professional guidance. Work together to find the right plan for you and add CBT theapy to optimize effects as well as learning skills to better life. This will include sleep skills! Best wishes.

JUST SWITCH: No you can just switch. Some people cannot tolerate Remeron (mirtazapine) and Elavil is completely different.

Were they both: prescribed to be used at the same time for you?  Mixing these two medications may increase risk for serotonin syndrome.  However,that does not mean that one will of necessity have this side effect.

Different drugs: Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) Remeron &amp;amitriptyline can all have the side effect of sedation &amp; each is sometimes prescribed for use as as sleep aid rather than their primary clinical benefit for allergy related symptoms ( Benadryl) &amp; antidepressant (Remeron &amp; Amitriptyline ). But they are differ in how they are constructed chemically or in the way they work . You &amp; your doctor can decide  which medivine may be best.

would smoking a small amount of weed be safe ( for nerve pain ) be ok with other meds i'm taking. amitriptyline, mirtazapine, venlafaxine ?

Some people: dealing w/nerve pain take 1200 mg daily of a natural supplement called Alpha Lipoic Acid. Check w/your doc to see if he/she thinks that's ok for you.  Peace and good health.

my dr put me on 10mg elavil a tricylic antidepressants.i am lexapro (escitalopram) 20mg and remeron 30.mg. i suffer from g a d.are these o k together. thanks?

Not recommended...: The Mirtazapine (Remeron) is fine. Elavil (amitriptyline) oral and Lexapro or escitalopram oral both increase affecting serotonin levels in the blood. Too much serotonin is a potentially life-threatening situation. Severe signs and symptoms include high blood pressure and increased heart rate that lead to shock.

besides remeron, (mirtazapine) what other med is good for sedation and anxiety? trazodone gives me terrible nightmares & elavil is evil to get used to.

Anxiety/sedation: Other alternatives can include sedating ssri's such as paxil, (paroxetine) or antihistamines such as vistaril, both at night. Discuss with your primary care doc.
