is sitting in a steam room good for you?

Steam rooms: Ancient cultures have always used steam rooms to help relax and detox from the stresses.  I think it can help people to relax and feel better but make sure you are well hydrated when doing that since you do lose alot of water.

my gym has a steam room. what illnesses could i catch from other people in there if they have it? i.e. if they have a cold, etc.

Risk of Sauna: The same risks of sharing a closet with one or more complete strangers.   The sweating is not the issue, but the close confinement with others bratheing is.  Then compounded with an environment that would allow a viruse to survive longer outside of the body.

trying to kick a cold. is it beneficial to go to gym and "sweat it out" on a bike and then steam room, or better to just rest and only rest? thank you

Accepted Answer

Neither: When one has a minor respiratory infection, my advice is to continue exercising but to decrease the intensity of the work outs by 30-50%. Going "full bore" or doing nothing are both not as beneficial. See your doctor, however, to make sure a lighter work out is ok.

if i'm in the steam room with someone who has a cold, and he sneezes, am i more likely to catch his cold due to the steam? or same as being outside?

Probably a wash: It's probably about the same risk.  I can't think of a reason why the steam would make it more transmissible.  The best thing you can do by far is good hand washing and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as much as you can.

Steam can help: In general when it comes to the nose and sinuses steam has been shown to be helpful. I'm not sure if a "steam room" is the same as "steam" used in studies of nasal function. The heat inside the room might have adverse effects on you especially if you have a fever or other systemic problems.

does eucalyptus oil spray in a steam room kill cold and flu viruses? if so, what else does eucalyptus spray kill?

Increase blood Flow: This is a chemical that increases blood flow to the mucous membranes that line the sinus cavities acting as a mild irritant.  This then allows better flow though and relieving congestion.  Similar to irrigation with saline or salt water.

good day, i have noticed that after i use sauna and steam room at the gym and take a shower. my eye sight  becomes blurry for few seconds. then after a while i see clear again.

Orthostasis: The vision is likely linked to vascular issues. When you sit in the sauna or gym your blood vessels dilate. This can make you prone to orthosatis and this would likely explain your symptoms.

cold sweats and goosebumps while working out in a normal temp room. flushed face but cold body. i have ist and am on bystolic. this has never happened before. cold and clammy with jaw pain for about 2 hrs after. hr was good for activity level. why?

Stop!: Before you do ny more workouts please seek full work-up by a specialist Cardiologist. Your symptoms are disturbing. would be extremely helpful if you wrote down your history in detail and brought it with you to the Cardiologist.

See your doctor: This is a problem that necessitates a face-to-face meeting with your doctor.  This will allow him/her to examine you, ask specific questions. And possibly order tests to find out what's wrong and what to do to help you.

what over-the-counter medicine good for a cold and fever?

I like Tylenol (acetaminophen) : Alternate with Motrin for fever.    Plain Robitussin (guaifenesin) for cold symptoms.  And stay well hydrated.   If symptoms worsen.  See your doctor
