Pink Eye: Classically a "pink eye" is due to viral conjunctivitis: is very contagious with severe itchiness almost alwyas. If you do have true pink eye, the most natural way to treat it is cold ice packs for itchiness; cold tears in refrigerator helps also. If severe an eyemd can rx stronger drops. If discharge, use warm towel to clear it away. Any vision change, see eyemd.

hi there, i have itchy eyes and they are watery. now a bit of a fever. 
im not coughing or anything relating to flu symptoms. could this be pink eye?

Allergies : Rinse eyes with saline and use an over the counter allergy eye drop preparation. Monitor temperature, and if thick drainage occurs consult with Healthtap during a consultation or with your physician. 
There are different types of pink eye. Further symptoms of a viral infection would make an infectious cause more likely. Avoid dust, smoke and other irritants.

Viral Conjunctivitis: Not treating - this is a common option for mild or moderate infections. Your tears contain chemicals that fight off germs (bacteria). Without treatment, most cases of infective conjunctivitis clear on their own within 1-2 weeks. Often they clear within 2-5 days. If symptoms become worse then see a doctor to check your eye and to see if you need treatment.

Bacterial infection?: The original 'pink eye' episode, was caused by a virus, and 1s usually self limited and gets betterwith time.  However if a bacterial infection sets in because your eyes are more susceptible then you can get yellow stringy mucus and discharge.  See your eyemd right away to receive the appropriate antibiotic.

Yes: You may be having a reaction to the contacts or the contact lens solution.  It should be pretty easy to sort out with an exam.

Accepted Answer

A few possibilities: This could be due to allergies, dry eyes, or eye infections.  All can start or affect 1 eye first.  The treatments are very different. For allergies, zaditor (ketotifen) is a good otc eye medicine.  For dry eyes, lubricating tears are necessary.  For infection, usually of the eyelids, start with eyelid warm compress and diluted baby shampoo scrubs.  You should have a baseline exam with your eye doctor.

after being on ciprofloxocin for pink eye for 5 days. i still have slight matted eyes, but extremely itchy. what should i do?

Allergic: You most likely have allergic eyes and an antihistamine drop for your eyes will likely work better.  If your lids are itchy and inflamed, the problem may be from a contact allergy or rosacea which will require an exam by your doctor.

Conjunctivitis vs ?: There are many causes of red/pink eye. Itchy red/pink eyes might be allergic conjunctivitis while goopy red/pink eyes might be infectious conjunctivitis. Regardless, you need to be examined as soon as possible to get correct diagnosis & treatment.

Conjunctivitis: No contacts  for one week, itching can be normal with pink eye unless you also have allergies! Continue antibiotics drops for 24 hrs after your eyes feel and look normal!

Not long: While other symptoms may precede the pinking up of the eye, usually "pink eye" (conjunctivitis) usually starts with the redness and concurrently irritation and excess tearing.  So if you have watering and itching and pinkness does not appear quickly, it is more likely something like allergy.  If the vision is changing, or the pain is signficant, then see your ophthalmologist.
