when is abdominal pain an emergency? i can't sleep, been dizzy, barely eat. had surgery for endometriosis a few years back.

Pain: Is alway a sign that something is wrong. If dizzy, weak, unbearable pain, fever, then you should go to the er .  If you have vomiting and diarrhea then it is probably the stomach flu and unles you are so dizzy you are about to pass out you can probably rehydrate at home. It you are worried seek help.

how we can identified that a chest pain is an emergency?

Accepted Answer

Severity matters: Any chest pain that is severe and lasts more than just a few seconds at a time should be considered an emergency. Chest pressure may be cardiac. Pains that are not heart related include brief (1 second to a few seconds) pains  that come and go, and pain aggravated by deep breathing. The latter pain, although not cardiac, could still be serious, as it could indicate a pulmonary (lung) embolism.

my 30 year old stepson has a knot behind his ribcage causing the rib to protrude but he is not having any pain? is this an emergency situation?

No: Unless this is related to an injury or is painful or interfering with his breathing, he can schedule an appointment to see his doctor. All the best.

i was flossing as usual & one pair of teeth felt unusually tight.  when i pulled up the floss, the filling flew out! no pain. is it an emergency?

Not emergency: No. But in the morning you should contact your dentist.

It depends: It depends on what type of arthritis that you have.  Talk to your doctor to help develop a plan for you.

Not an emergency: Chest pain is not always an emergency . If it is happening sometimes  and when breathing basically speaks against any serious problem particularly tot he heart condition . You may have rib cage issue or what we call musculoskeletal pain . If you care not coughing , does not have fever and other constitutional symptoms , you need not worry . Take some advil or tylenol (acetaminophen) and see if it responds.

my hip socket shattered in a car accident 16 years ago.had rebuilt with titanium. now i'm having pain& swelling. is this an emergency? cant afford dr

Accepted Answer

Probably NO, but: See your doctor as you'll need xrays to be diagnosed properly and treated. You most likely have gone on to develop full blown arthritis, which will need to be treated. 
I don't think the er would be able to help, but you need an orthopod for further care.

85-yr old's mri results showed inflammatory pannus indenting the anterior thecal sac. no ra. was having mri for memory issues. no back or neck pain. is this finding an emergency? it was incidental find on mri?

: If it was the reporting radiologist and the ordering doc would have contacted the pt. immediately. It has to be iterpreted in context for the indication for which ordered. Pl call the doc and ask  for explanation. In the meantime dont worry.

Accepted Answer

BP plus symptoms.: BP becomes an emergency when it is accompanied by signs or symptoms of ongoing end organ damage such as stroke / heart attack / active kidney damage / etc.  The kidney damage issue not always easy to tell.  BP elevation needs to be considered in context - what is your baseline, why do we believe it is elevated, what meds have or have you not bee taking, etc. You should discuss with your doc.
