No: Imaging would not rule out hematologists malignancies. In the right clinical context, diagnosis may include specialized blood and bone marrow studies.

Accepted Answer

Yes: There are not a lot of people because this disease hits those over 60 more often but we have had patients in their 20's with multiple myeloma, a very few who were also pregnant.

do you think that multiple myeloma could cause heart disease?

Accepted Answer

It is possible: Some forms of myeloma secrete a protein called a light chain that can invade organs like the heard or liver and cause it to function poorly. Most of the problems with the heart arise from many of the early treatments of myeloma which included a drug called adriomycin. Modern chemotherapy can still cause heart problems but not at the same rate.

: Both those diseases are mostly chronic and prolonged. It is difficult to diagnose them in early stages

Cancer: multiple myeloma is a malignacy of the plasma cells of the marrow.  It presents with bone pain and lytic lesions usually diffusely invoving the spine.  It is very effectivey treated with newer chemotherapeutic agents.

Does not add up: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, the results you provided do not add up. It would be prudent to consult a hematologist.

Light chains: Light chains (kappa and lambda) are a part of the immunoglobulin molecues the body makes. A given plasma cell only makes one type of light chain, most commonly this is kappa. When immunoglobulin cells proliferate like a neoplasm, then one type will overwhelm the others. Your values are nearly even, and the ratio is not abnormal, so it is unlikely that you have myeloma or another Ig-producing lesion.

Electrophoresis and: Free serum light chain tests.  Multiple myeloma is generally diagnosed by electrophoresis of serum, urine and free serum light chain test.  X-rays of the bone may reveal lytic lesions that are a strong indicator of the disease.  Confirmation of the diagnosis requires examination of bone marrow by a pathologist.

Stage i: β2-microglobulin (β2m) < 3.5 mg/l, Albumin >= 3.5 g/dl stage ii: β2m < 3.5 & Albumin < 3.5 ; or β2m 3.5- 5.5 irrespective of serum albumin stage iii: β2m >= 5.5.

Not really: Used to treat myeloma and very rarely (in high doses) associated with acute leukemia's.
