Acanthamoeba: Acanthamoeba is a very serious parasitic corneal infection. It is painful, difficult to treat, and often results in scarring and decreased vision. It may require surgery in the worst cases.  If you are unlucky enough to have this infection it should be managed by a board certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in corneal surgery.

Sometimes it is spontaneous but also can be associated with various systemic diseases.

Contact lens wear: Only rarely causes keratitis when patients use their lenses appropriately (i.e. Removing them nightly, cleaning and disposing of them on a regular basis).  The risk goes up with patients who sleep with their lenses and with patients who use a pair of lenses for longer than they are supposed to be used for.
