Nf 2 also called central neurofibromatosis caused by mutation of merlin in chromosome 22q12. 10% of all nf and causes bilateral acoustic tumors.

when do cafe au lait spots stop appearing that indicates neurofibromatosis? i have two on my buttocks that have been confirmed by dermatologist. should i worry? would i have more by now if i had neurofibromatosis? would i know by now if i had it?

Ignore them: It is normal for people to have  a few. You would need 8 or more sizable spots by your age to fall under suspicion for that disorder.

Neurofibromatosis: Are you certain your sister has NF2?  What about NF1?  The reason for asking is that cafe au lait spots are not used to diagnose NF2.  What about your parents?

Many cases are spontaneous, and you may never develop symptoms of NF.  It depends on which type we are talking about and what other family members have it.

Once you are sure of the diagnosis then your questions may be answered.

Much better: In past the past the average life span of individuals with NF2 was  shortened compared to people without NF2.  Improvements in diagnosis and management have changed this statistic.I would discuss it with your neurologist since she/he knows the specifics of your condition

two or more growths on the iris of eye (lisch nodules); 
a tumor on the optic nerve; (abnormal development of the spine (scoliosis), temple bone or tibia (leg bone).
