i take zoloft (sertraline) 150mg daily and i currently have a bad cold and cough. is it safe to take nyquil? i read articles saying it can cause serotonin syndrom.

Ok for short time: Yes you may take . You can also try simple Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) or Claritin for decongestant.
 Steam Unhalation and Ginger Tea will help you.
 Afrin Nasal Spray for less than 3 days as decongestant can be used

Caution: NyQuil contains dextromethorphan which interacts with Zoloft (sertraline) to increase risk of serotonin syndrome. Check with prescribing doctor before using NyQuil.

Depends: If you have fever, take some Tylenol (acetaminophen). Things like Nyquil do not do anything to treat the cold. Drink plenty of water and get some rest.

yes: In my practice, with patients on sertraline, I have found they can take nyquil along with it without any problems.  I suggest you consult with your treating physician to check for the best answer to your specific situation.

Doubtful: You will probably not have any problems except for increased drowsiness more from the NyQuil. But in general do not mix drugs like those. Sertaline and Paxil (paroxetine) are very similar drugs so I'm not sure why you would be on both of those. Talk to your doctor.

Nyquil: nyquil, contained benadryl (diphenhydramine) which is anticholinergic, which can make you feel goofy and disconnected.this is probably what us making you feel like this.

Yes: Per Epocrates drug interaction data base,there are no significant interactions.

Probably: Both drugs can raise serotonin - theoretically to dangerous levels - but that would be very unlikely since 15 mg is a low dose of mirtazepine and 25 mg is a very low dose of Zoloft (sertraline).

Safe: Safe is such a relative term. Whenever taking multiple meds you run the risk of interactions or side effects. With that being said, realize that Effexor (venlafaxine) affects norepinephrine and seretonin, both of which are neurotransmitters associated with dep and anx; whereas, zoloft targets mainly seretonin. If prescribed both, attention needs to be paid to developing seretonin syndrome, which is an overload.
