can you please explain the differences between year-round and seasonal allergies?

Allergy exposure: Year-round allergies are those that are due to things that you are exposed to all year long (cat, dog, dust mites, cockroach, and some indoor molds).  Seasonal allergies are allergies that occur due to sensitivity to pollens (tree pollens in the spring, grass in the late spring/early summer, weeds in the late summer/early fall, and some outdoor molds in the fall).

Ineffective: It probably will not do harm to double the dose but it also will not be likely to do any better. There are a limited number of action sites and the additional dose will be wasted. Ask a pharmacist or your doctor for other sources of relief instead or in addition. Best!

Pollen: Seasonal allergies are caused by exposure and symptoms from plants that pollinate during different seasons of the year.  Trees pollinate in spring, grass pollinates in early to mid summer and weeds from late summer to fall.   The seasons depend on the part of the country a person lives in.  When these billions of pollen grains in the air come into contact with people, allergy symptoms occur.

Gastric reflux: Acidic reflux is irritating to the nasal mucosa and can cause symptoms similar to allergy.  It seems likely that you have treated acid reflux and removed the irritating trigger, thereby also treating your "allergy" (or at least the acid reflux was exacerbating allergy-related inflammation).  Well done!

can i give my 1-year old son children's zyrtec? he seems to be battling seasonal allergies. if so, what's the recommended dosage?

No. : Zyrtec not the good medicine for one year old child. This maybe not the allergy at all. Most likely this is teething syndrome and swelling gums and nasal mucosa because of this. Use nasal washing with normal saline 2 times a day and camomile tea for gums 4-5 times a day. Follow with pediatrician for other medications.

my 17 year old son has some health challenges.  he has seasonal allergies that sometimes lead to sinus infections.  he has asthma.  he gets colds a lot.  sometimes he has migranes.  hes had stomach issues including acid reflux.  he plays high school hock

Can see Dr in-person: With such symptoms, that are a variety, one has to get a calendar (find a free calendar online) and write down the various symptoms he has, when they occur, what the symptoms interfere with, what makes symptoms worse, what makes symptoms better, what activities are done each day, what foods are eaten each day... and bring the diary to his doctor for an evaluation. Several visits may be needed.

Yes: Yes, you can give your 2 year old child Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for allergy symptoms. Its onset is fast within 15-60 minutes and it lasts for about 4-6 hours. Otc zyrtec's onset is also fast and it lasts for 24 hours. Keep in mind that those medications can control mild allergy symptoms. If  your child still suffers from the disease after taking otc meds, you might want to bring him or her to see an allergist.

Allergies : While it might be nice to think about moving to the tropics during tree season, this is not really practical for most of us. Consider seeing an allergist to discuss immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots. They can be highly effective.  If you want to take medication, be sure to start before you are exposed to the allergen. Nasal steroids and antihistamines work best before the reaction begins
