Constipation: Please discuss infant constipation with your pediatrician. A breast fed baby can go days without stools but they should not be hard or cause child to strain. You may have to add some prune juice to diet once in a while, but please speak to a pediatrician.

See doctor: There are many causes of rectal burning. Infection or hemorroids are common causes. You can try a hemorrhoid cream and see if this helps but if it does not you may need to see a doctor for an exam to get a diagnosis and treatment.

five month old stooling four times a day. he is at 60% for weight and 90% for height, no apparent weight problems. could this be malabsorption?

May be normal: If your baby is breastfeeding, four stools daily is entirely normal.  If on formula, this may still be normal. If the stools are odorous and loose, it may suggest a lactose intolerance if he/she is on a dairy-based formula, however.   In any case it does not sound like malabsorption as his growth is entirely appropriate at this time.  Do talk to your doctor about your concerns.

GI Transit time...: ...is improved with exercise, but many other factors alter the rapidity of food moving through your gut, as well the volume &amp; frequency of stooling. For instance, what's your dietary fiber intake? Be aware that 3-4 stools daily may be normal. Be concerned if there are accompanying "alarm signs" like abdominal tenderness, fever, blood with bowel movements, black stool...

As all humans are individuals so the stooling of each person is different, depending on Diet/ exercise/ body weight/stress level/and more. In general one should stool once daily but this could range from as many as 3 times/ day to as little as 2 or 3 times a week. Bottom line one shouldknow what normal is for one.

Sound a little often: Might be worth leaving dairy out of your diet and avoiding dairy supplementation for a while and see if that changes . if still concerned call Pediatrician

How fed ????: A breast fed infant may stool a bit every feeding or an overflow diaper once a week. If it is soft it is not constipation. If formula fed, the pattern is more likely to be a few daily or at least every other day. If stools are soft & baby feeds well & plays, there is no reason to be concerned. If a poor feeder & not wetting diapers at least every 6 hours, i would have her checked.

Doctor can evaluate: Rectum and anus blood can be due to irritation or infection. Serious problems like cancers are possible, depending on one's age family history, and bad luck. Irritation can occur from diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhoids, friction, allergies, medication effects, etc... Infection can be from various germs. A primary doctor can evaluate. Some people go ahead with endoscopy to rule out colon cancer.
