Five month old stooling four times a day. he is at 60% for weight and 90% for height, no apparent weight problems. could this be malabsorption?

May be normal: If your baby is breastfeeding, four stools daily is entirely normal. If on formula, this may still be normal. If the stools are odorous and loose, it may suggest a lactose intolerance if he/she is on a dairy-based formula, however. In any case it does not sound like malabsorption as his growth is entirely appropriate at this time. Do talk to your doctor about your concerns.

Doubtful: Most babies with malabsorption are sick looking and really fail to thrive. Weight would be well below 10 th %. Assuming no solids yet , breast fed babies may have 4 stools per day. Formula fed babies may have 4 stools as well-- can be watery and loose if overfed. Unless there is poor weight gain or foul smelling stools probably no need to worry. If worse see a ped gastro specialist, .
