i can't flare my nostrils. is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Yes: There are several muscle movements that are normally involuntary but can eventually be learned as a voluntary movement (tongue rolling, ear wiggling, nostril flaring). Some of them, like tongue rolling, are genetic and you may not ever learn to do them. It's not abnormal to not be able to voluntarily do these things.

one of my nostrils get blocked while the other one is fine,if one is opened the other one is blocked,is this normal or should i be worried?

one of my nostrils is so dry and always filled with dried stuff and has a bump in it. this has been going on for 2 months. the other is normal.

I suggest that you: ...irrigate the nostril with a saline nasal spray which u can obtain in the "cough/cold/allergy" section of any pharmacy.  Use it several times a day for a week or so.  If you're still having problems, see a doctor.  You might have nasal allergies, a nasal polyp or a sinus infection that's draining into that side of your nose.  Best wishes.  Dr. Anne

Nasal cycle : Asymmetry. If your left nostril becomes congested when on your left side and switches  to the right when you turn over, you have exaggerated asymmetry in the automatic nervous system; commonest cause might soound strange but poor diet is often the answer.

i'm 18- no underlying health issues. i just had a nosebleed out of both nostrils the came from my upper nostrils, not lower like usual. is this normal?

Not normal: Bleeding is not usually the norm.  Your bleeding may not represent anything serious but needs to be checked out especially if it continues with either your PCP or an ENT specialist.

DEPENDS: Most commonly these are apthous ulcers, the medical term for the white erosions people often get in their gums /inside their lips. This can happen in the nasal mucosa as well.  Depending on your habits, or the humidity conditions or the status of your immune system it could be serious or something that will resolve with time.See your dr. And give your history so that you can get a clear diagnosis.

laying down one nostril always is blocked but when i stand or sit up its ok is this normal ?

Nasal Rinse: It is normal, and if you take the opportunity when you stand up to snuffle tap water into your nose and blow out the mucous drainage, your nose will remain clear when you lie down again!

Allergies or Virus: Gravity is causing the secretions in your nose to go to that side. If it is happening every morning you might have allergies or a virus that are causing your stuffy nose. You can try taking an antihistamine or decongestant before bed time. Nasal saline irrigation may help as well. If these don't help, go in to see your doctor.

either one of my nostril is frequently blocked. is it normal or  sinusitis? what would i do with this? please help

Try: Try inhaling steam or taking a hot shower. This can break up the congestion naturally. A Netti pot is a sinus rinse that can wash out your sinuses. Afrin (oxymetazoline) and Sudafed can help for congestion.  If you have allergies or a sinus infection more  treatment can be provided by your doctor after a complete history and exam.

i have exposed white ish /slightly pink raw tissue in one nostril after septoplasy post 7 day, on the stich side, is this normal.thank you.

Maybe: While the incisions made inside your nose for this procedure are healing, you may see a number of unusual sights inside your nose.  Continue using the sprays/irrigations your doctor recommended and go back to see her/him if you have additional concerns so that you get the best care.
