Go to hospital now: I'm not convinced that gout has anything to do w/toes turning black. But if you have any pain at all in your toes, go to hospital now for an evaluation. I'd be worried about some ischemic issues leading to gangrene of some sort. Bottom line, body parts typically don't turn color as described unless blood flow is compromised.

No: A black toe is a sign of tissue damage secondary to inadequate blood flow. Or some  infections.

Accepted Answer

Usual/unusual: Gout frequently but not always manifests in the big toe (1st MTP joint) but can also involve any other joint and it is no fun at all, no matter which joint or joints it hits.  Turning black and blue afterward is unusual in my experience and indicates that something else may be going on.

Many possibilities: Toe pain could result from different reasons, of which may include: trauma (fracture, tendon or ligamentous tear, arthritis), infection, metabolic conditions (gout) musculoskeletal or biomechanical abnormality, or neurologic conditions (neuropathy). A thorough history and physical exam and possibly laboratory and radiology exams could determine the cause.  If symptoms persist get it evaluated.

Unlikely: unlikely to actually be gout at that age.   A rheumatologist can withdraw fluid and find out what is really causing the problem

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. Purulent discharge suggests infection overlaying gout.  It would be prudent to see a doctor. Wish you good health!

Black is not normal: Gout shouldn't cause black discoloration.  It suggests some form of bleeding issue, whether it be related to bruising or an abnormality with the blood vessels in that area.  Or, it can suggest death of tissue in that area, so called necrosis.  Alternatively, if you are using a silver based dressing in that location it could discolor your skin.  Nonetheless a healthcare provided should assess this!

Gout: The Uric acid is often normal or falsely low during an acute gout attack. What medications have they tried?

Gout: Need to be on an anti inflammatory medication also- Advil, alleve, or other.
Bruising can be normal as swelling in the joint continued.
Can take 2-3 weeks to subside
See your local podiatrist or Orthopaedic foot and ankle specialist

Walks like a duck?: Don't be too anxious to discount possible gout. There is more to it than having a elevated uric acid. You need to look at the quality of your diet and life style, genetics, age, body type and degree of swelling, heat and pain. The time tested method of securing the diagnosis of gout is evaluation of the joint fluid. To remove all doubt, have your toe evaluated by a specialist.
