is it easy to completely get rid of esophageal thrush?

Esophageal thrush: Typically 'thrush' or candidal infection will melt away when given the right antifungal medication.  Sometimes, however, the fungus can be 'resistant' to the first line of treatment.  (Just like 'smart' bacteria getting 'round antibiotics).  If there isn't a good response within several days, time to think of resistance. Of course correcting the problems that contributed to thrush would help too.

Oral antifungals: This can be managed with mouthwashing using topical antifungals.  The problem is that normal adults do not usually get thrush unless they are diabetic, on antibiotics, steroids, or have some impairment of their immune system.  Any adult needing treatment for thrush or having difficulty clearing it should be tested for HIV among other things.

Antifungals: Antifungal topical treatment such as nystatin(mycostatin) liquid suspension swish and swallow or Clotrimazole troches dissolve in mouth are the initial treatment.  If this fails oral systemic treatment with fluconazole(diflucan) 100-200mg./day will usually be curative.  Disease in aids patients can be more refractory.

Problem: Mycelex (clotrimazole) troches can be used repetatively.  The issue here is that oral thrush should not occur in a normal adult, and particularly when it may need continued treatment.  You need to have your immune status checked and be HIV tested.  Good luck.

how long does it take to get rid of thrush with daktarin gel?

Accepted Answer

Varies: Daktarin oral gel is Miconazole 2%.  It usually takes several days to see improvement but you should not stop using it once it has improved. Continue taking it for several days after it has resolved to help prevent recurrence.
Mycelex troches can also be used and are probably easier to use since they are lozenges that you let slowly dissolve in your mouth.

Thrush: Thrush (oral candidiasis) is a fungal infection and not a bacterial infection. Hence, it is not treated with antibiotics. Physicians usually prescribe Nystatin (antifungal) for treatment of thrush - please see your physician for further evaluation and management.

MONILIASIS: Oral thrush is treated with Nystatin oral suspension. Vaginal monilia infection is treated with suppository or cream. Both  rx are for fungus but different strength.

Medication: is usually required to get rid of thrust.  Gargling with salt water after each us of Advair can be helpful in preventing thrush.  After a person develops thrush it usually requires prescription medication to get rid of it. have had 2 weeks of 200mg twice daily  of diflucan (fluconazole) for oral thrush and it didn't wk. what can i do to get rid of this?

Resistance /other: You are taking rather adequate dose of the medication  and if it is not responding one of the two things are happening . One the infection is resistant to the medication ; two , the diagnosis is not accurate .You may have some other condition . I would suggest to go back to your doc and explain what is happening .
