Unsure, yes and yes.: As far as I'm aware, there's no definite genetic link in IBS.  It can show up in teens. It is treatable, yes.  Now, treatment should include physiologic and emotional considerations.

GERD: It sounds more like gastroesophageal reflux. Try taking a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) like nexium, (esomeprazole) zantac or prevacid. Take it once a day at night and also see your doctor for more information and an evaluation.

Occ. Lax. safe: If you have iBS, increase fiber, do not skip meals, avoid triggere foods, regular exercise.Occasional  laxatives are not harmful.If fiber doesn't help symptoms, your doctor may prescribe magnesium hydroxide oral (Phillips' Milk of Magnesia) or polyethylene glycol (Miralax).

Rome Criteria: There is no lab test or procedure to diagnose ibs, but labs, xrays, colonoscopy, endoscopy can be used to rule out other conditions that are similar to ibs. Ibs is often diagnosed when one has the signs and symptoms of the rome criteria. These are criteria that experts have set up to diagnose ibs.
