Sometimes: When not in use moist heat for about 15 minutes an hour works well.  After use ice, like with a bag of frozen corn for 15 minutes really works wonders.

Do what feels best: The corticosteroid shot you had is a long acting but slow release medication-after 2 days we typically expect the medication is just beginning to take effect and it may take a week to really kick in.  If you don't feel any improvement at 2 weeks, you should talk to your doctor about other options.  Pt or home stretching and strengthening may help.  Good luck!

i have extremely severe pain in my left shoulder and upper arm from bursitis.  i've tried heat, cold, physical therapy and meloxicam with no success. ?

Get MRI: If you have 'bursitis' diagnosed by history and physical exam/ X-rays only and have had the treatment you discussed w/out improvement then a good quality MRI scan is indicated. If you've had an MRI scan which confirms above then see a qualified ORS for possible subacromial injection or arthroscopic decompression/rotator cuff repair. Best if Luck!

bad shoulder bursitis. heating pad, ice, ibuprofen or cortisone pills not working. any exercises to help?  very bad pain, cannot sleep from the pain .

Tricky: The shoulder is an incredible joint.  However, with injury, we try to stop moving it.  Thus, it has a tendency to stiffen up and make movement painful.  It is often difficult to judge if it is the injury or the lack of movement that is more painful.  Talk to your doctor and therapist and they will direct you to either push through, or rest.

is it good for me to remove my bursitis surgically? or is it better to rest and take nasids?

Location.: Bursitis can occur in many locations ( knee, hip, shoulders, etc). Generally a conservative approach ( therapy, nsaids, bracing) is always tried before surgery.

Sometimes: Nsaids such as advil (ibuprofen) will occasionally help for bursitis. It may depend on the bursa involved and the severity of the involvement.

is riding a recumbent exercise bike good for hip bursitis?

Accepted Answer

: I don't advocate that type of exercise if you have active painful  hip bursitis. Get it treated by your physician or orthopedic specialist before performing that repetitive activity of your hip joints.

good evening. i am a student manual therapist & have a pt with sub-acromial/deltoid bursitis, any info on referral for u/s guided steroid injections?

Don't need US to do: I am assuming there was an MRI that should increased fluid/signal on T2 images in the bursa and the clinical exam is consistent with bursitis and not AC or Labral or RTC pathology.  Any trained sports med doc, orthopedic doc can do this injection in the office and US is not needed.  They can be very helpful in reducing pain and inflammation which can make it easier for them to do PT.

Need consultation: The swelling has persisted and may indicate internal knee damage. I suggest you see an orthopedist. S/he may well recommend a knee MRl to see what the problem is. Fluid on the joint may or may not be due to internal damage requiring surgery.

Lateral Hip Pain: Trochanteric bursitis documented on MRI can easily treated with an injection.  If the MRI did not show a tear of one of the hip abductor tendons and clearly should the bursitis and it is not relieved with nsaids then a corticone injection may be beneficial.
