Sometimes: When not in use moist heat for about 15 minutes an hour works well. After use ice, like with a bag of frozen corn for 15 minutes really works wonders.

At times: If the pain is acute you would want to use ice, if not then moist heat would be best.About 15 minutes is a good time limit for either ice or hat.
