Severe disease and extra-pulmonary disease needs to be treated with amphotericin b, an IV antifungal agent. Milder disease is usually treated with an oral drug called itraconazole which is safe and well tolerated.

Walking pneumonia: This is not a good medical term and is used to describe patients with pulmonary parenchymal infections that do not require hospitalization.  It can be caused by many different microorganisms and more often than not, these are not transmissible from person to person unless in very close contact. An example would be atypical pneumonia due to mycoplasma pneumoniae, often person to person in school.

? treated in a dorm?: I can't imagine anyone with stap pneumonia being treated in a dorm. Most are isolated in a hospital room during the initial stage of treatment. Droplet precautions (masks and good hand washing) are recommended during the prolonged coughing phase after initial treatment.Staph are present in the environment continuously & a patient may carry the germ for months after successful resolution of the pne.

Well not exactly: Not in the sense that a cold or flu is.  Staph is a bacteria that is common and lives on surfaces, like the skin, etc.. Most of us are in contact with it all the time, and 80% of people eventually are colonized with it at least some of the time ( that is it grows on you, in your nose or on the skin) sometimes it can cause disease, like after a flu it can cause pneumonia.

Can be: Pneumonia is usually the result of a virus or bacteria infecting the lungs.  These organisms are usually deposited in the lungs by way of droplets of moisture that allow these bugs to get airborne.  If you're kissing someone with pneumonia, there's a pretty good chance of these droplets getting in your mouth and ultimately into your lungs.  I wouldn't chance it... Your loved one will understand.
