Due to problems with dependence and lethality in overdose, this family of medications is less popular than in the past.

Stevens-Johnson : Sjs is an immune mediated reaction where your body is tricked into thinking of itself as the enemy. Some people have livers that can't metabolize barbiturates well, they are "slow acetylators". This leads to an accumulation of metabolite byproducts that may bind to normal tissue ("haptens") and trigger a destructive immune response against the skin ("keratinocytes" in the "epidermis").

However, it does not take much (usually less than a one month supply), so these medicines are very dangerous in an overdose, especially if combined with alcohol. In addition to abuse potential, this is why these medicines are not used as much as in the past.

NO BANNED CONTROLLED: Barbiturates can be found in anti seizure meds like Phenobarbital  (not used as much now) and also in the headache meds fiorinal (aspirin butalbital and caffeine) and fioricet. I am unaware of them being actually banned. Th ey are highly controlled due to addvtive/abuse potential. Not a popular in use  as in the past for anxiety and sleep. Quualudes are banned but hat is another category. It is just that there are newer safer meds.

Yes the are used: If used by an expert, they are good sedating drugs used for anasthesia and for controlling severe seizures. They are safe when used by the experts in their use.
