Many Uses: Barbiturates, popular during the 1950's & 60's, are used in a number of different ways. Originally used to treat anxiety and insomnia, benzodiazepines are now used. Still barbiturates are used in anesthesia, epilepsy, assisted suicide, and death by lethal injection. Due to problems with dependence and lethality in overdose, this family of medications is less popular than in the past.
