Yes the are used: If used by an expert, they are good sedating drugs used for anasthesia and for controlling severe seizures. They are safe when used by the experts in their use.

Barbiturates: Barbiturates are only rarely used for IV sedation and are only used by very few people. Thirty years ago the situation was different.
