Goiter : An enlarged thyroid is not dangerous unless it interferes with reaching or swallowing or has a suspicious nodule. Otherwise it can be common and can be monitored yearly.

Goiter: Its usually caused by inflammation. This may be autoimmune or infectious. At times it's caused by normal pubertal changes. It does not have to be associated with dysfunction ie hyper or hypo thyroidism.
